Artist Statement

I have only been learning Encaustic for a few years. I have worked in many other media but was always intrigued by Encaustic . I was afraid to try it thinking it was too complicated.I have always been a photographer and painter but the camera became my primary tool years ago.
I became ill a few years back with a chronic disease that rendered it impossible for me to create anything. i used my camera as my paintbrush . Some of my work can be seen here :

I started working on an semi-abstract photography series that i have entitled On the Inside Looking Out ( i will post here in an album soon as it is part and parcel of my artistic process) , which led to my work in Encaustic. It was my inspiration to put the dream to the test of reality.
I am self-taught and still learning the nuances of this ancient practice. I am forever changed by this process. I am unceasingly enamored of the smell of molten beeswax , that particular tang of damar resin and the vivid colors of pigment . The Gaussian blur of it all coming together somehow , an alchemical miracle.
I make all of my own medium , use pure beeswax and natural pigments as well as anything else that catches my eye and speaks to me. I really believe there are no limits in art . It accepts what you offer , if you offer it sincerely.

I am inspired by the art of others and by the camaraderie of  kindred spirits in wax.

Many Blessings to All ~

Thank you, Susan. Have you ever been to San Miguel? It is a beautiful town, filled with cultural events, lots of art galleries and even more artists.

Thanks, Susan.  I'm capitivated by the bands of black and white, which I call interstices.  Yes, they certainly do remind one of piano keys which all imply rhythm.  I'm having a blast with these.  I'm not just creating them in encaustic but also in acrylic, watercolor/ink, and graphite.  I'm exploring all of the possibilities but encaustic is by far my favorite and main medium.

Hi Susan, Thank you for your kind words about my artwork. I find it therapautic to paint with wax and happy you have found the finished paintings therapautic too. Good luck with your studies. Your work is lovely so I hope  you will achieve your goals.
