Hi! I am wondering about what kind of Gesso is to use ? Some says you should´t use acrylic Gesso, or paint to canvas made for oil-or acrylic painting. I paint on wood and have used clear wax as firts layer, but tried white paint. But I have acrylic Gesso home. Anyone tried it?

If you work on rigid support you don't need to use gesso at all... white coat of latex primer is fairly enough in case you'd like to have your base white, otherwise you can paint straight on your substrate. Gesso used to be for oil painters for fine details when they needed really a flat surface without canvas texture.

Thank you Antonin! I read your answer long time ago, but I got my computer krasched, so I couldn´t response.

I usually use white, OR black gesso, as a prime layer, then since I'm working with MPO, I apply a thin layer with clear paste, then continue to build up the paint. :) Mari

using regular acrylic gesso as a white background can be disastrous. I have had half a painting slide off using this method. R&F make a gesso specifically for encaustic, so do several other suppliers. This gesso has tooth and will let the wax grab on. The  acrylic is too smooth and the wax cannot get a hold. You can also just paint your board with 2 or 3 layers of medium, fusing and scraping down in between layers. Or just paint a few layers of white encaustic directly onto the board.

My encaustic works dated from 1977 and up do have undercoat of white latex and they are in excellent condition even on canvas , much easier on wooden boards.

Best result that I got is with R&F encaustic gesso it has tooth.
